Policy and Submissions
- We are preparing a submission to Australia’s review under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
- We are preparing feedback on the latest draft of guidance materials from NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
- We continue to provide input into the NDIS LGBTIQA+ strategy.
- We are providing input into the development of the Fourth Action Plan under the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children.
- We continue to represented on a range of national fora and steering committees addressing issues relevant to women and girls with disability.
Collaboration
- WWDA is on the DPO Australia delegation to the 11th Conference of States Parties (COSP) to the Convention on the Rights of People with Disability (CRPD). Women with disability are a key focus of this year’s conference.
- The COSP 11 delegation will be led by WWDA members Therese Sands (PWDA) and Rosemary Kayess (Centre for Disability Law). WWDA members Sarah Houbolt will be WWDA’s formal representative, along with Margherita Coppolino attending in her capacity as president of the National Ethnic Disability Alliance.
- WWDA will also be represented at Australia’s review under CEDAW this month.
- WWDA will be endorsing the CEDAW shadow report prepared by Kingsford Legal Centre and Equality Rights Alliance, in addition to making our own submission. WWDA is working with our DPO Australia colleagues to renew our campaign for a Royal Commission into violence, abuse and neglect of people with disability.
- WWDA is working with our DPO Australia colleagues on a comprehensive shadow report on progress toward implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in Australia WWDA continues to work with 1800RESPECT on two projects to reduce violence against women and girls with disability.
- WWDA is also represented on the 1800RESPECT national steering group. WWDA joined with our sector colleagues to release a joint statement on the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Provider and Investor Brief.
- DPO Australia released a position paper on the need for a National Protective Mechanism under OPCAT. An NPM is an independent oversight mechanism focused on preventing torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment (ill-treatment) primarily by monitoring and inspecting places of detention.
