WWDA has voiced its strong support for increased and targeted support for parents with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual disabilities.

In a letter to the Department of Social Services, WWDA CEO Sophie Cusworth expressed full support for the National Advocacy Collective’s submission on General Foundational Supports.

The letter emphasised the fundamental human right of people with disabilities to have a family and parent children, highlighting obligations under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. WWDA echoed the National Advocacy Collective’s call for fully resourced supports that address the unique needs of parents with disabilities, including:

  • Culturally appropriate and accessible information
  • Supported decision-making resources
  • Access to independent advocacy and peer support
  • Targeted parenting support programs
  • Support for disability-led organisations

This action reinforces WWDA’s ongoing commitment to advocating for the rights and needs of parents with disabilities in Australia.
