In November 2024, WWDA Policy Officer Clare Gibellini represented our community as part of the Australian Government delegation at the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on the Beijing+30 Review. The conference, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from November 17 to 21, marked 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark framework for advancing gender equality, was adopted.
The delegation, led by Ms Padma Raman PSM (Executive Director of the Office for Women), also included Australia’s Ambassador for Gender Equality, Ms Stephanie Copus Campbell, and Dr Anna Cody, Australia’s Sex Discrimination Commissioner. The event, organised by the United Nations ESCAP in collaboration with UN Women, brought together ministers, civil society leaders, and other key stakeholders from across the region to assess progress on gender equality and strategies for the future.
The conference focused on critical themes, including advancing women’s economic empowerment, increasing leadership opportunities, preventing violence against women, and addressing emerging issues like technology-facilitated gender-based violence and climate change. Discussions also highlighted ongoing challenges, such as the disproportionate burden of unpaid care work on women and persistent inequalities in access to resources and opportunities.
Clare’s participation in this regional review further strengthened WWDA’s contributions to global gender equality efforts.
