STATEMENT:
The National Women’s Alliances congratulate the Australian Government on Australia’s highest ever ranking in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap report, rising to 13th position out of 148 countries. This is a testament to the commitment and collective efforts towards advancing gender equality in Australia, including under Australia’s Working for Women Strategy. This significant improvement from 24th place in the previous report reflects meaningful progress across the four key dimensions measured by the Global Gender Gap Index: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment.
We know there is still much to do. Persistent gaps remain, particularly for women with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and women living in remote, rural, and regional areas. We know too that rates of violence against women continue to climb in Australia. It is vital that our progress is inclusive and reaches all women, in all their diversity and keeps them safe.
The National Women’s Alliances remain steadfast in our commitment to working collaboratively with the Australian Government. Together, we will continue to inform and drive meaningful progress towards an equitable future.
