Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA) has created a fact sheet to explain the rights of people with disabilities to participate in decisions that affect our lives, as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
This fact sheet explains what meaningful participation looks like, why it matters, and what governments can do to ensure women and gender-diverse people with disabilities are included in policy that affect our lives. Focusing on General Comment 7, it highlights two key CRPD articles, Article 4.3 and 33.3, that require governments to work in partnership with representative organisations of peoples with disabilities, such as WWDA, when making laws, policies or decisions that affect our rights.
“We are the experts in our own lives. When the Government involves us in the decisions that affect us, there are lots of benefits – including stronger laws, more inclusive policies, and better outcomes for our communities.”
